Hannah Porter Mr. Condo Pre-AP Bio-1 November 4, 2014 Pre-Ap Biology Research Paper The cell is the basic unit of life and is the smallest, simplest organism that can perform all of life’s functions. The cell was discovered in 1665 by Robert Hooke. The three types of cells are plant cells, animal cells, and prokaryotic cells. These cells share many qualities but are also different in many ways. There are a few organelles that exist in all three types of cells. The first of these is the cell membrane (also known as the plasma membrane). The plasma membrane is the outer boundary of the cell that protects the cell from its surroundings. It is selectively permeable because it controls what enters and exits the cell. Carl Naegeli and C. Cramer discovered the plasma membrane in 1855. The cytosol is also present in the Plant, Animal, and Prokaryotic cells. The cytosol is the thick, gelatin-like liquid in the cell that accounts for almost 70% of its volume. The cytosol of a cell is the substance in which the organelles are suspended and it provides the proper conditions for their function and movement. The cytosol was discovered by Albert Claude, Christian de Duve, and George E. Palade in 1835. A third structure contained in all three types of cells is the ribosome. Ribosomes are spherical in shape and are made up of RNA and protein. They are often found on the endoplasmic reticulu m. Statement of Purpose to Pursue International Business in...

While encountering hardship, I tell myself â€Å"Make it happen,† simply because giving up isn’t an option. I believe that if I work hard enough, I can create miracles. I believe in the American Dream and that success will reward effort, yet, in reality, not everyone in this world has access to opportunities that lead to the type of success he or she deserves. Through networking, I’ve gained insight into the realities of living in disadvantaged communities, sympathy towards those from less fortunate backgrounds, and more importantly, a strong desire to make things happen in those communities. My mission is to provide career training opportunities to those who lack resources, enabling them to compete and thrive in various fields. I want to pursue international business and have sought experiences to build on my existing skills and innate entrepreneurial spirit. While it is important to be equipped with knowledge and experience, my most valuable asset towards success is my strong determination to turn ideas into innovations and use business to help people realize their true potentials. I am drawn to business because it is what brings the right people together, making their mutual visions reality and benefiting society. Through my experiences in FBLA, I’ve gained the skills and strategies I’ll apply in business, as well as the confidence in my ability to initiate change. Nikes and Barbies free essay sample

Am I a Barbie doll? No. I’ve realized this when I discovered the power of my Nikes. Barbie is engineered by marketing professionals to wear high heels every day of her life; this means it would be impossible for her to wear a pair of Nike shoes. I have molded my Nikes to my feet. To be able to put my feet in a pair of high heels would be intimidating. Have you ever heard of Barbie going on missionary trips to help other in foreign countries? Or spending her Saturday advocating to rights of women and minorities? As far as I know, this has not happened. I never had a Barbie doll as a young child, instead my mother made sure I had a nice pair of shoes or a book in my hand. There was just something about Barbie that did not interest me at all. Growing up I remember getting CD’s or books for Christmas, not some plastic doll with long, luxurious blonde hair, and perfect measurements. We will write a custom essay sample on Nikes and Barbies or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Yes, Barbie is an inspiration to most of us. She teaches a lot of individuals great marketing skills, and stands for the capitalism America is known for, whether this is a good thing is up to you. I was disappointed when I dissected Barbie one day and discovered that there was absolutely nothing inside. Barbie was empty, uninteresting, and I automatically lost interest. I mentioned that Barbie does not wear Nike shoes. How would this fact help you learn more about me? When I lace up my Nike running shoes, I feel invincible, or as if I could concur the world instantly. I think it has to do with the stories my mother told me as a child. Saving lives every day of her life at a major hospital in our small town; she wears scrubs and comfortable sneakers, and putting everyone else before herself. The stories told to me have been a great inspiration to me. She made me think about all of the things that really I am capable of doing. She was the one who gave me my first pair of Nike running shoes and planted in them was the power of invincibility. To this day I wear my Nike running shoes everywhere except to anything non-conventional. I like to look outside of the box when observing things. Barbie’s existence and imagination depends on the plastic box that surrounds her. This is very boring. Life is to be experienced from all perspectives. Live outsi de of the box, because you only have one life to live, why not make the best out of it. Never once in my life did I expect to run in a 5K marathon. Through tenancy, faith, and perseverance, I was not only able to fulfill this dream, but also do more in my life. Due to success in some athletics such as track, I began to sense that my team mates were not motivated like they had been at the beginning of the year. I knew I’d had Jesus in my life to help motivate me and help me keep confidence in myself for anything I do or have done. This motivated me to start an Fellowship of Christian Athletes team at my school early in the morning, hoping would help them and myself become closer to Jesus Christ and the other team mates also. The goal with starting this organization was to help motivate athletes to come closer to Jesus, and build confidence in themselves and help their team mates stay motivated, positive, and become closer to Jesus. Having this organization at my school became a huge impact on many athletes. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is still running st rong and many non-athletes became closer to Jesus through FCA. Just the other day I had one of my female team mates come up to me and said, â€Å"I don’t know if I believe in God.† I have helped someone overcome their fear of not having faith in God and what he is powerful of doing. It’s amazing what one simple book can do. Jesus is always there, no matter how you may think of Him, and He is always willing for you to come into His life and praise Him. When I look around at the girls at my school, I wonder which girls spent a lot of time with Barbie growing up. These may be the girls who are always concerned about what they look like on the outside and not about what’s inside. The ones who worry about what dress they’re going to wear than whether they will graduate from high school. The ones who worry about dating the guy with the newest car, when right down the street guys are worrying about where they are going to get their next meal. Don’t get me wrong, I am not bitter, or even envious. I am proud of who I am, I am proud to be a girl who always wears those original Nike running shoes. I am proud to try to be that invincible, revolutionary girl who wears her Nike running shoes.

Less Is More free essay sample

They always told me that â€Å"the more, the merrier†. This principle guided my life for a solid thirteen years. â€Å"Well,† I thought, â€Å"the more video games I have, the merrier I will be, the more candy I eat, the merrier I will be, the more friends I have, the merrier I will be.† I lived in Germany for almost four years, where portion sizes are enormous and speed limits are extremely high. My mom’s side of the family is Italian, and they are always telling me to put a little more meat on my bones. I never thought that I could be happy with so little. Albania has changed that. Albania is a developing country, with aspects that fit the definition of a third-world nation. I have lived here for nearly two years, and this country has changed my life dramatically. Many Albanians live with very little. The average job pays about 2 dollars an hour. We will write a custom essay sample on Less Is More or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Most families live in small houses and apartments. Coffees are never even close to the size of a Starbucks â€Å"tall†. The average family has only one car, usually a run-down sedan (and if they can’t afford a car, four-person families will pack onto one motor scooter). Despite all this, Albanians are some of the happiest people I have seen in my life. They are not bothered by the fact that they have so little. Instead, they do whatever they want to do. They will always invite friends into their house for coffee. They will greet familiar faces on the streets with a smile. They are very happy with the lives that they lead. This way of life has changed the way I lead my own life. No longer do I long for the newest video game system, no longer do I long for a Super-Sized Big Mac, no longer do I long to visit an American movie theater. Sure, I occasionally want a root beer or something truly American, but I have suppressed that urge. No longer will I guide my life on the principle of â€Å"the more, the merrier†. Now, I believe that less is more.

Road to Mecca free essay sample

What Is the reason for Anuss visit? What does he want Helen to do? Marcus had been to see Helen previously about her moving Into an old age home. HIS primary reason for now being there Is to see If Helen has made her decision on this matter. Marcus asking Helen Youre quite certain that you want to discuss this now, Helen? shows that they were both fully aware of the reason for this visit by the Domineer. He is also concerned as to whether she is eating correctly and uses this opportunity to bring her some vegetables out of his garden. This is evident when Marcus says And at our age we need fresh vegetables, Helen. (wagging his finger at her) Marie biscuits and tea are not a balanced diet. 2. Marcus claims that he knows what is good for Helen and that is why he has come to visit her. We will write a custom essay sample on Road to Mecca or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Do you believe him? Why? I believe that Marcus in his own mind believes that he knows what is best for Helen, but in actual fact he has no Idea what is going on In Hellene mind or psyche. I believe that his Intentions are good and coming from the right place, being concerned and doing his Domineer duties. When Mans says You seemed to understand that the only motive on our side Is to try and do what Is best for you. Shows that he thinks he knows what Is best for Helen. Im concerned with her feelings, Miss Barlow, not yours Marcus: Miss Barlow, for the last time, what you do or dont believe is not of the remotest concern to me. Helen is, and my concern is that she gets to live out what is left of her life as safely and happily as humanly possible. I dont think that should include the danger of her being trapped in here when this house goes up in flames. This statement from Marcus shows us two things:l) That he believes he knows the best solution to her safety as he would not want to send her away if he didnt believe that it was the best decision for her. He also wanted to keep her safe due to the fact that her curtains had caught alight and she, had after a short while of trying to extinguish the flames, Just stood there and watched It burn. The concern Is that she didnt run out and/or call for help. She Instead Just stood transfixed and watched the flames. When Else says Dont talk about her as If she were not here. Shes right next to you, Domineer. Ask her, for Gods sake But this time give her a chance to answer. This statement shows us how much Marcus thinks he knows what is best for Helen. So much so that he takes the liberty to speak on her behalf without her asking him to do so. Over and above this Marcus has made all the necessary plans and found out all the relevant information about the old age home for Helen without her instructing him to do so. 2) He has feelings for Helen. Over all Marcus has a true concern for Helen and believes he knows what is best for her.In my opinion he does not truly know her sorrow, happiness or her needs. He does not discover her actual reasons until much later In the play. His Intentions may be pure and, in his opinion best for Helen but he does not truly know what Is best for her. 3. Else claims that Marcus Is In love with Helen. Do you agree with her? Why? I agree with Else that Marcus is in love with Helen. Throughout scene 2 there is a build up to a friend and Domineer, but in a deeper way. This is shown in the play on many occasions. When Marcus says, The moment I stood up there in front of the ingratiation, I knew your place was empty we become aware of how Helen stood out amongst the other members of the congregation from the onset. From the beginning she had made an impression on him. Those statues out there cant give you love or take care of you the way we wanted to. And, God knows, we were ready to do that. But you spurned us, Helen. You turned your back on our love and left us for the company of those cement monstrosities. Marquiss reaction at this point reveals his emotional connection to the situation. He is not merely a Domineer acting in the est. interests of a congregation member, he is a man who is Jealous of the attention given to the cement monstrosities. Furthermore, Fudged gives us insight through his stage direction, Else, who has been listening and watching quietly, begins to understand. Here we clearly see that even Else is aware of Marquiss true feelings. Marcus really begins to express his feelings when he says, No, you havent! If that were so, you wouldnt be asking me to defend myself against the accusations of someone who knows nothing, nothing, about my true feelings for you. Here he is admitting that he has feelings that up to this point he has kept hidden. Feelings that were perhaps not appropriate in his mind and so he chose to suppress them. When he says, a life I care about as deeply as any I have known Marcus is expressing not Just concern and love but absolute devotion. Perhaps the most telling moment is when Marcus says, No, I think I do believe you, Helen which only makes it all the harder to accept. All these years it has always felt as if I could reach you.It seemed so inevitable that I would, so right that we should find each other again and be getter for what time was left for us in the same world. It seems wrong terribly wrong that we wont. Altars death was wrong in the same way. We are left with no more questions about his love for Helen. Marcus has compared the death of this possible relationship to the death of his wife, Aleut which was a turning point and almost a breaking point in his life. It is clear that he wanted to be the person that Helen could turn to and rely on. He wanted to fulfill her needs. That he was not that person does not detract from the reality that he was not. Relate the structure of the retina to its function. Explain how the Essay

Relate the structure of the retina to its function. Explain how the retina changes due to retinitis pigmentosa - Essay Example The photoreceptors function by receiving information transmitted in the form of light. This information is then transferred to the optic nerves, to the brain through the optic disc, the spot on the lower outside of the retina. The eye has two major cavities filled with clear water liquid. One, is located between the lens and the cornea, which is filled by the aqueous humor. The other is located behind the lens within the eyeball itself, just touching the retina. This is filled by the jellylike vitreous humour which constitutes the bulk of the eye. These liquids function as liquid lenses. Similar to the cornea and most parts of the eye, their function is to focus the light into the retina as liquid lenses. As said earlier, the retina houses the photoreceptors so that information can then be transferred to the brain for interpretation (Vander, et. Al, 2001). The main question now is why is the retina placed as far inside the eye where information has to be passed from many different parts like cornea, pupil and liquid lenses, and when speed of information transmission is very necessary especially in sensory organs. The last thought exactly answers the structural question of the anatomy of the eye. The retina is structured to layer the inner cavity of the eye to allow more surface area for information to be passed to the many different photoreceptors housed in the retina. The liquid vitreous humor helps disperse this light so that information can pass to the photoreceptors at a single instant instead of the light being directed at a single line and spreading to the many different photoreceptors in the retina. This means that the retina is perfectly structured for speed in processing of information. It is also easier to vascularize this way than if the whole cavity is filled with retinal cells (Feinberg, 2004). What is it with the retina that allows its function? The retina contains two types of
